Applications have officially opened for aspiring young healthcare professionals across the UK who want to help people feel good every day.

This September, Boots UK is launching a brand new Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship scheme for young people aged 18 – 24 who have a passion for community healthcare and who want to care for their customers and patients every day.

In the two-year programme, young people will have a unique opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours to deliver expert advice and industry-leading patient care at Boots UK, helping their patients to feel confident about their healthcare needs. Apprentices will be able to gain skills and qualifications, while making a real difference to the lives of patients, and supporting the Pharmacist and pharmacy teams in Boots with the dispensing and supply of medicines.

The programme also offers apprentices opportunity to gain a Level 3 Technical Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science and a NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Service Skills, which is the nationally recognised Pharmacy Technician qualification.

Richard Bradley, Pharmacy Director at Boots UK, comments: “Providing exceptional patient care is at the heart of what we do, and we’re looking for young people who will be the future of pharmacy to join our business. This is an exciting opportunity for young people who are looking for a brilliant platform to launch their careers in community healthcare.”

Tess Fenn, President of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK), comments: “This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated young person to start their professional career as a pharmacy technician supported by an apprenticeship programme. I am delighted that Boots UK is offering these training places, as the role of pharmacy technicians is expanding and evolving at a pace that is required to meet the healthcare needs of a growing population. Pharmacy Technicians are key members of the pharmacy team in delivering quality pharmacy services to patients and customers. As future qualified registered professionals it is important to have a first-rate start to their career that fully prepares them for their future role.”

These young apprentices, while playing a key role in the provision of community healthcare, will gain full-time, paid, permanent employment and on the job learning. They will be eligible for free membership with APTUK while training to support their development, and once qualified, can be professionally registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Boots UK is piloting this new Pharmacy Technicians Healthcare Apprenticeship programme in four areas across the country*, and taking on around 70 new apprentices from September.

The Boots Pharmacy Healthcare Colleague NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship programme is also running again this year for those aged 16 – 24 who are looking to gain a Pharmacy Advisor qualification. During this 12 month programme, young people will be fully trained so they can offer industry-leading healthcare advice and dispense medication within the pharmacy.
