Boots UK has today announced that it is backing a call by NHS chief executive Simon Stevens to dramatically cut the amount of single-use plastics in hospitals.

The pledge is part of a package of measures in the NHS Long Term Plan to reduce the environmental impact of the health service, and aims to cut up to 100 million single-use plastic items from NHS catering facilities each year.

For 170 years, Boots has demonstrated its commitment to reduce plastic and has committed to eliminate plastic straws and single-use cutlery from its 14 hospital stores with an on-the-go-food offering.

Sebastian James, Managing Director, Boots UK and ROI said: “Plastic waste continues to be one of the most important issues around the world today and for many years Boots has been actively working to reduce the impact we have on the environment. We’re pleased to support the NHS plastics pledge, which will massively reduce plastic waste and make hospitals healthier for patients and colleagues.”
