As pupils in England return to school, Boots UK is offering advice and targeted product solutions to help prevent ‘maskne’, as wearing a face covering is now recommended in the classroom for secondary school students.

During the last year, Boots has seen a strong correlation between mask wearing and demand for specialist skincare products and services. Sales of expert skincare increased by39 per cent in July 20202, when it was made compulsory for anyone over the age of 11 to wear a face mask on public transport and in communal school spaces in England and Wales. Meanwhile, Boots has seen demand for the Boots Online Acne Clinic double over the past year1.

To help teens with ‘maskne’-prone skin, Boots Pharmacists and Beauty Specialists are on hand to provide expert advice. The UK’s leading pharmacy-led health and beauty retailer is also offering 30% off its Tea Tree and Witch Hazel product ranges to help combat troublesome skin.

Melissa Dadgar, Boots UK Pharmacist, said: ’Maskne’ is a broad term that covers all skin conditions caused by an increased use of face masks. This can include everything from irritation, caused by friction due to a mask rubbing against the skin, to clogged pores from the trapped moisture and sebum that can build up when you wear a face covering for a long period of time.

“If our teenage customers – or anyone experiencing ‘maskne’-prone skin – need further advice about prevention and treatment, they can talk to their local Boots pharmacist or they can use the Boots Acne Online Clinic.”

Available for teenagers aged 16 and above, the Boots Online Acne Clinic provides those with mild to moderate acne access to prescription-only treatments. Customers can sign up to the clinic here.

Boots Beauty Specialist, Selin Mustafa, said: “There are simple steps that can be followed to help prevent your skin reacting to your mask, including, moisturising your skin to help reduce friction and washing your face as soon as your get home from school. At Boots we offer a range cleansers, moisturisers and other products – with over 150 skincare brands there is guaranteed to be something for you, whatever your skin type.”
